On Spring Samba Night at Drom Luiz Simas and his group Recipe for Rhythm will play a great repertoire
of sambas which are perfect for dancing samba-no-pé (basic samba step) and passo marcado (simple
choreographies)which are the staple dance styles of Rio's Carnival. There will be a large dancing space
right in front of the stage. Before the music sets start, master dance teacher Danielle Lima will give a

Luiz Simas was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He is a composer, singer and pianist, and he has
performed and recorded with many of the top Brazilian artists. Many of his songs have been recorded in
Brazil and in the US, and he also composed several soundtracks for tv.
Living in New York since 1989, he has performed as a solo singer/pianist, as well as with his own
group in various jazz clubs, jazz festivals, universities and music halls, both in the US and in Europe, in
the Caribbean (Jamaica, Trinidad, British Virgin Islands) and in Brazil.
He’s also a very sought-after music director and arranger, having worked in the US and In Brazil
in numerous recordings and live performances with several jazz and Brazilian jazz artists.
His "Recipe for Rhythm" quartet has Luiz on piano and vocals, "Sweet" Sue Terry on sax and flute,
Leco Reis on bass and Adriano Santos on drums.
About the dance teacher
Danielle Lima studied ballet, jazz, tap, modern, national and international folklore dance in her native
Rio de Janeiro. She then performed for several years with G.R.E.S. Beija-flor, the largest samba school in
Rio.
Danielle appeared in numerous tv shows in Brazil, and performed with major dance companies.
She joined the Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey Circus, where she worked with choreographer Tony
Stevens. Later on she taught at the Harlem YMCA and joined Djoniba Dance & Drum Centre as a teacher
of Brazilian Samba. Danielle's approach for teaching includes a mixture of fitness, traditional and
contemporary Samba from Rio and Bahia. She and Diego Kelman Ajuz founded the Brasileirando Dance
Group, a group that has performed at the Lincoln Center, The Soho's Art Parade in New York City and
at the Dance Conference in Saint Louis.
Danielle Lima is one of the Teaching Artists for the Dancing Classrooms program, a division of American
Ballroom Theater. She is also a certified YOGA Instructor at YOGA Effects in NYC and Karma Kids Yoga
certified teacher. She has been teaching dance professionally for over 7 years.
