Alto saxophonist, composer, and educator David Bixler is known for his unique playing and writing. A native of Wisconsin, now living in New York City, David has performed and toured with the orchestras of Lionel Hampton, Toshiko Akiyoshi, and Duke Ellington. His tune, “The Darkness Is My Closest Friend”, was cited by Down Beat magazine as, “the most intriguing offering on the disc.” David’s 2010 recording, “Auction Project,” (co-led with Arturo O’Farrill), is a unique combination of jazz, Latin, and Irish music, which fearlessly traverses borders. His latest CD “The Nearest Exit May Be Inside Your Head” was released this summer. Jazz Times says “this music has staying power that does not wear out its welcome, thanks to Bixler's distinctive tunes and fruitful arrangements, as well as their quality performances by musicians that the leader knows very well.”
