Kendra Shank began her music career at 19, busking in the Paris subways as a folk singer-guitarist; and it was in the City of Light, 11 years later, that her passion turned to jazz. After honing her craft in jazz clubs there, and in Seattle (studying with Jay Clayton), she moved to New York where Shirley Horn presented her at the Village Vanguard and co-produced her debut CD. Shank's 5 critically acclaimed albums, including her ground-breaking A Spirit Free: Abbey Lincoln Songbook, have won numerous “Best of the Year” awards and DownBeat poll recognition. She has toured in Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, Canada and the U.S. coast-to-coast, headlining at festivals, concert halls and clubs.

In addition to leading The Kendra Shank Quartet, her NY working band of 11 years (featuring Frank Kimbrough, Dean Johnson, and Tony Moreno), she has performed and/or recorded as a guest with Abbey Lincoln, Bob Dorough, Jay Clayton, Bud Shank, Peter Leitch, Mark Lamb Dance, and more. Kendra Shank combines jazz originals, standards, world music, folk/pop tunes, and open improvisation in an adventurous, genre-bending style that inspired Gary Giddins to call her "one of New York's most original performers" (Jazz Times).
