About
Some of the UK's leading artists are joining forces for this very special concert in aid of Side by Side Refugees, a non-political NGO providing humanitarian relief to those living in refugee camps in Calais and Dunkirk. Expect an eclectic mix of soulful groove, jazz standards, lyrical songwriting and musical virtuosity from award-winning, critically acclaimed artists performing intimate stripped down sets with all proceeds going to Side by Side. A unique night of amazing music and fantastic raffle prizes for a much needed cause.Ian Shaw, a regular volunteer at the camps and one of the driving forces behind this eveningâs event, is a record producer, broadcaster, raconteur, pianist oh and one of Europeâs finest male jazz vocalists. Named Best Vocalist of the Year twice(!) at the BBC Jazz Awards, multi-award-winning Ian Shaw is a huge talent with the most engaging personality and an ability to make every song his own. Described as âthe voice of the decadeâ it is not by chance that he was the first British Jazz vocalist to be signed to American label, Milestone, which resulted in a number of highly acclaimed US recordings. âOne of the scene's class actsâThe Guardian; ââŚour finest Jazz singerâ Time Out. SARAH GILLESPIE is a unique and creative musical force whose style has been described by RockânâReel as âa bracingly eclectic mix of Beat poetry with jazz, folk and Middle Eastern elementsâ. Her terrific lyrics reflect her passion for politics and the music is witty, poignant, quirky and swinging. Hailed as one of the major singer-songwriters on the British scene she has toured extensively in the UK and Europe performing at festivals, theatres, arts centres and headlining at major venues, and has also appeared live on both BBC Radio 4âs âWomanâs Hourâ and âStart the Weekâ as well as BBC London 94.9âs âSimon Ledermanâ show. ââŚan incandescent new presence who matches her imposing delivery with superior lyricsâ Guardian; âHaunting tunes and striking lyrics ⌠yearningly pretty and bitter sweet.â The Independent. Ian and Sarah's Special Guest tonight is TANITA TIKARAM, an impressive popular singer who first came to prominence in 1988 whilst still a teenager, with her multi-million selling debut album âAncient Heartâ that produced two charting singles, "Twist in my Sobriety" and "Good Tradition". Born in Germany (she arrived in London at the age of 19 accompanied by her Malaysian & Indo-Fijian parents), Tanita then produced a number of other, fine, albums through the early 1990's before taking a break from the music industry and moving to San Francisco. Tanita recorded and toured intermittently through the 1990âs and 2000âs, making only occasional records including âLovers in the Cityâ (1995), âSentimentalâ (2005) and âCanât Go Backâ (2012). March of this year saw Tanita release her latest, highly acclaimed, 10th album âCloser to the Peopleâ which has already garnered impressive reviews, with its single, the pulsing, rhythmic âThe Way You Moveâ coming out on video this April. Though Tanita is associated with pop and folk music, in a recent interview she stated that the new record was inspired by the biography of American jazz singer Anita OâDay, saying that OâDay had both âdark addictions, but also a tireless zest for life. This whole album is really a riff on her salvaging obsession with music". Tanitaâs distinctive, husky, voice and superlative songwriting have been an important part of popular culture for more than 20 years and it is with great pleasure that we welcome this iconic figure to the Club tonight in support of this most worthy cause....
