On March 21 at Cavatina Hall, world premieres will take place of previously unknown compositions by Wayne Shorter, written nearly 60 years ago for Miles Davis and Lee Morgan. Manuscripts of works for jazz sextet and orchestra, discovered in the artist’s archive in Los Angeles, will be heard for the first time in their original form during the Festival Gala of the 28th Bielska Zadymka Jazzowa.
The project will be led by the outstanding conductor Clark Rundell, and the parts originally written for Miles Davis and Lee Morgan will be performed by one of the world’s greatest trumpeters, Ambrose Akinmusire. He will be joined by an American sextet featuring saxophonist Dayna Stephens, as well as the Polish Radio Orchestra in Warsaw. Clark Rundell is one of the most versatile conductors on today’s music scene, specializing in repertoire ranging from the 18th century to contemporary music, from classical to jazz and cross-genre projects. He has conducted leading European orchestras, including BBC ensembles, Klangforum Wien, the Gulbenkian Orchestra, and the Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège. He is a highly regarded advocate of contemporary music and a conductor of numerous world premieres.
The Polish Radio Orchestra in Warsaw was founded in 1945 on the initiative of violinist and conductor Stefan Rachoń. Initially associated with recordings for Polish Radio and Television, it gradually evolved into a fully fledged symphony orchestra of international renown. The orchestra has performed in Europe’s most prestigious concert halls, including La Scala in Milan, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Alte Oper in Frankfurt, and the Lingotto Auditorium in Turin. The Polish Radio Orchestra in Warsaw remains one of the most important ambassadors of Polish musical culture worldwide.
Outstanding trumpeter and composer Ambrose Akinmusire is a graduate of the Manhattan School of Music, the University of Southern California, and the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz. In 2007, he won two of the most prestigious awards in the jazz world: the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition and the Carmine Caruso International Jazz Trumpet Solo Competition.
He made his Blue Note debut with When the Heart Emerges Glistening (2011). His subsequent albums—including The Imagined Savior Is Far Easier to Paint, Origami Harvest (named Best Jazz of 2018 by The New York Times), and the Grammy-nominated On the Tender Spot of Every Calloused Moment—have firmly established his position as one of the most original artists of his generation.
A recipient of the Paul Acket Award (North Sea Jazz Festival) and a multiple winner of the DownBeat Critics Poll, he received a Grammy nomination in 2026 for Honey from a Winter Stone in the category Best Alternative Jazz Album.
Dayna Stephens is one of the most original and expressive saxophonists on the contemporary jazz scene. Born in Brooklyn and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, he studied at Berklee College of Music and the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz under the guidance of Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, and Terence Blanchard.
His style combines deep lyricism, narrative melodicism, and harmonic boldness, fluidly crossing the boundaries between improvisation and composition. He has performed and recorded with artists such as Brad Mehldau, Kenny Barron, Julian Lage, Gretchen Parlato, Cécile McLorin Salvant, and Esperanza Spalding.
Stephens has appeared on the world’s most important stages—from the Village Vanguard and Blue Note in New York to festivals across Europe and Asia—building a reputation as an artist of exceptional sensitivity, expressive power, and a distinctive, integrated sound.
