We've been saying for a long time that the future of our jazz is in very good hands. There are many young people training in various parts of the country, as well as abroad. Friday, May 15th will be very special when the Sebastian Mueses Trio takes to the stage at La Azotea of the Dominican Fiesta Hotel to share their music with everyone at Fiesta Sunset Jazz.
Sebastian will be making his first appearance in the country after returning from the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hamburg, Germany, where he participated in an exchange program between that institution and the International School of Contemporary Music at UNPHU.
Saxophone, bass, and drum trios were, at best, a rarity. But when jazz artists (Sonny Rollins, in particular) began experimenting with chordless ensembles in the 1950s and 60s, the saxophone trio became a bold extension of those experiments and, over time, a staple of small-group jazz. The absence of piano or any other chordal instrument gives the band's sound an openness, a carefree freedom that suggests anything can happen at any moment.
The Sebastian Mueses Trio is comprised of Sebastián Mueses on double bass and electric bass, Nicolás Mondragón on saxophones, and Gonzalo Frómeta on drums.
After successful performances in venues like ours, various locations in the Colonial Zone, and at the Casa de Teatro Jazz Festival, the emotional impact will reach new heights, as they will share an exquisite offering in the best tradition of the Sax Trio, reminiscent of greats like Sonny Rollins, Lee Konitz, and Ornette Coleman, with a varied repertoire that combines new standards with avant-garde and original pieces.
Together, Sebastian, Nicolás, and Gonzalo will explore the diverse languages of swing and straight-ahead jazz within the modern context, deconstructing and reconstructing well-known standards and lesser-known pieces of modern jazz… you'll have to be there to find out!
