The HarmĂłnia JazzmƱhely pays tribute to GĂĄbor SzabĂł the world renowned figure of Hungarian jazz guitar, with a special concert marking the 90th anniversary of his birth. Three exceptional guitarists will evoke SzabĂłâs unmistakable sound, spirit, and improvisational freedom in their own voices, that unique atmosphere in which Hungarian folk roots, the freedom of jazz, and Latin and Eastern influences merged into a single, unmistakable musical identity.
ISTVĂN GYĂRFĂS, guitarist and bandleader, is one of the most melodic, heartfelt, yet artistically refined masters of modern swing. His music is enjoyable, atmospheric, and sophisticated, yet always completely accessible. In recent years he has performed in numerous clubs and festivals both in Hungary and abroad, in his own groups and in various other formations, among them memorable tours in Africa and Asia. In October 2013 he achieved great success playing to a full house at Londonâs 606 Club with vocalist Natalie Williams. A few years ago he released his album âHommage Ă GĂĄbor SzabĂłâ dedicated to the legendary Hungarian musician.
BARNABĂS NĂGYESSY, guitarist and composer, began his studies at the BartĂłk BĂ©la Conservatory and continued at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz. He has won several awards at talent competitions. His music is shaped by modern jazz, experimental free improvisation, rock, pop, minimalist contemporary music, classical music, and folk traditions.
GYULA KISPĂL, guitarist, founded the band Rambler in 2019, a group devoted for years to preserving and promoting GĂĄbor SzabĂłâs musical legacy.
The three guitarists will be accompanied by two leading musicians: TIBOR FONAY on double bass and bass guitar, and ATTILA GYĂRFĂS on drums and percussion.
